It's official! Marriage equality becomes law in France

gaywrites:

French President François Hollande officially signed a marriage equality bill into law this morning, making France the 14th country to legalize same-sex marriage. In addition, all married same-sex couples will now be able to adopt children.

Hollande is not doing well in terms of public opinion lately, and opponents of LGBT rights have retaliated against the marriage movement with violent protests and attacks. In the face of such adversity, the passing of the law is all the more significant.

Mr. Hollande signed the bill a day after the Constitutional Council dismissed a legal challenge by the right-wing opposition. “I will ensure that the law applies across the whole territory, in full, and I will not accept any disruption of these marriages,” he said.

Gay rights advocates praised the law, while a watchdog group, SOS Homophobie, said that France “has taken a great step forward today, although it is regrettable that it was taken in a climate of bad faith and homophobic violence.”

Félicitations, mes amis!

Marriage is not defined by who is denied it. When gay people share in the freedom to marry, it doesn’t change your marriage. It doesn’t change Tony Perkins’ marriage. My marriage is my marriage, and it means I’m able to share in the same aspirations of commitment and love and support and dedication and connectedness, and that my parents are able to dance at our wedding and that our family and friends are able to support and celebrate and hold us accountable for the commitment we’ve made to one another. That takes nothing away from anyone else…The gay people are not going to use up all the marriage licenses.
Evan Wolfson, of Freedom to Marry, destroys Tony Perkins’s anti-gay rhetoric and tells it like it is. I need “Gay people are not going to use up all the marriage licenses” on a t-shirt IMMEDIATELY. (via The Advocate)

U.K. introduces marriage equality bill

gaywrites:

Lawmakers in the United Kingdom introduced a marriage equality bill into Parliament yesterday, anticipating a February vote on the bill.

Debate on the bill and a vote are scheduled for February 5, the Associated Press reports. Although some religious conservatives oppose the measure, it is likely to pass, as it has the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron and other national leaders.

“We feel that marriage is a good thing and we should be supporting more couples to marry, and that is exactly what the proposals being brought forward today do,” Equalities Minister Maria Miller told BBC radio.

Yes!!! This WILL happen!

ih8religion:

Religion didn’t create marriage.  So why do so many religious leaders feel it’s right for them to control it?

Craving chicken sandwiches? Some gay-friendly options

gaywrites:

All this talk about Chick-fil-A may have made some of us hungry for chicken sandwiches that don’t leave the foul taste of homophobia in our mouthes. Finally, a cure!

Schnipper’s, a restaurant in NYC, will donate $1 from every purchase of its chicken sandwich in August to Marriage Equality USA, a nonprofit organization with a pretty apparent mission. Their Facebook page (linked above) reads:

A truly good Chicken Filet Sandwich would always be in favor of Marriage Equality. Ours is the best you’ll ever have since its made from fresh chicken breasts and hand dipped to order in our seasoned corn flour blend and buttermilk. It’s super crispy and [the chicken] is gluten free!

The sandwich is tasty – Marriage Equality is timely.

In addition, Hamburger Mary’s will donate the profits of its new “hate-free southern style chicken sandwich” to causes for LGBT equality. It’s no secret that the 12 U.S. locations of that restaurant are gay-friendly:

The original Hamburger Mary’s in San Francisco was started by a group of gay hippies in the 1970s, who wanted to open a gay-owned, people-friendly gathering spot where everyone was welcome — and they did so with only $500.

“We were extremely poor,” says Bob Charles, the last surviving founder of Mary’s.  “We were living on food stamps, SSI, and peace and love.  But we had some drug-induced fantasies of owning our own ‘anti-establishment’ bar/restaurant, run on our own relaxed and laid back agenda.”

Eat more chicken - the gay-friendly kind!

I love how Chick-Fil-A’s competitors are taking advantage of this to promote their products, at the same time campaigning for marriage equality. This is great for the lgbt community :)
