Brazil rules in favor of marriage equality
Brazil’s Supreme Court yesterday ruled that a same-sex civil union can indeed become a marriage.
In a 4 - 1 vote, the highest federal court ruled that the Constitution “makes it possible for stable civil unions to become marriages”.
Indeed “sexual orientation should not serve as a pretext for excluding families from the legal protection that marriage represents”, the court said in a statement.The court ruled in favor of two women who tried to become legally married in Rio Grande do Sul state. While the state courts don’t have to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling, it will likely have some role in what the individual states do with same-sex civil unions and marriages.
Civil unions for same-sex couples in Brazil were legalized five months ago, and Argentina is the only country in Latin America that fully legalized same-sex marriages.
This is so great. Baby steps lead up to big changes, and we’re starting to see them.
